The concern over Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) is that they combine with certain Oxides of Nitrogen, in the presence of heat and sunlight, to form ground level Ozone – which is the primary component of Smog. For this reason the Clean Air Act has very strict controls on them.
What are they? According to the EPA, VOC’s are “any volatile compound of carbon”. That’s pretty broad! However certain organic compounds have been specifically exempted from their list because they have a very low level of volatility and thus their environmental impact is negligible. Silicone is one of those low volatility compounds and most formulations are therefore exempt.
Most all of our industrial lubricants and solvents are VOC exempt. The following are specifically exempt:
